PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pollution-free flame-retardant polyester fiber, effective in a small amount and excellent in light resistance and heat resistance. SOLUTION: This highly flame-retardant polyester fiber is produced by copolymerizing an aromatic dicarboxylic acid or its lower alkyl ester with a diol component and a low molecular polyester derived from a phosphinic acid derivative expressed by general formula 1 (wherein Y represents a monovalent organic group expressed by formula 2 or formula 3) so as to be a copolymer having at least 2,000 ppm phosphorus content in the copolymer.
