The inland waterway ship (1) has anchor devices (3) near its bow which comprise an anchor. The devices have an inboard anchor chamber (17) in which an anchor is accommodated at least principally and on its under side have an aperture (19) for passage by the anchor. The anchor chamber is located midships. In the chamber are water spraying devices for cleaning the anchor chain or cable when the anchor is weighed and freeing the anchor chain/cable when the anchor is paid out. Lighting devices are provided as are distance assessment devices, such as a video camera. One or more sensors monitor the satisfactory function of the movable parts of the anchor devices. The anchor chamber, at least when viewed from the aperture, is hermetically closable. The anchor chamber is provided with a manhole with a hermetically closable cover (29).
