<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and system for making a switch automatically to an optimal surround depending on the genre of a melody under play or reception. <P>SOLUTION: In a music medium, e.g. an RDS, an MP3, or the like, the genre of music specified for each melody is recognized by a program in a microcontroller controlling a player or a receiver and surround switching is performed for a surround DSP such that a surround effect corresponding to each genre is attained.
