Asymmetric longitudinal tesseral shim coils and system for a nuclear magnetic resonance instrument are designed to generate random field profiles. In certain implementations the coils have very short dimensions. An Independent claim is made for a method for forming ship coils such that their fields are optimized so that they drop off quickly outside the axial length of the coil.
