A method for cooling chilled containers, with integral chilling units, stacked into a ship's hold has vertical ducts to provide a fresh air circulation. Each vertical duct serves two rows of containers. Two versions of cooling are described; a first version has fresh air blown down into the hold with the hot air displaced and expelled via vents under the hatch covers, and a second version in which the vertical ducts extract warm air, while fresh air enters via vents under the hatch covers. In both versions the vertical are fitted with blowers/extractors, and the bottom ends of the ducts terminate a distance above the floor of the hold, e.g. 6 to 20 metres, depending on the power of the fans and the layout of the containers.
