Method for engraving optical quality patterns onto cylinder using a CNC machine with the cylinder driven directly via a belt drive by a non digitally controlled motor

A method for engraving optical quality patterns onto a cylinder uses a modified CNC lathe with the work piece drive disconnected and replaced by a direct drive from a non digitally controlled electric motor. The direct drive has a simple belt driving a pulley attached to the cylinder. The lathe drive is disconnected in such a way that none of the reduction gearing rotates with the cylinder, enabling a smooth drive to be generated. Large cylinders can also be processed by supporting the cylinder between raised end stocks. The additional motor drive can be mounted on a separate base alongside the lathe.
