Chemical composition (I), especially for surface treatment, preferably etching and/or roughening, is obtained by mixing an aqueous hydrogen fluoride (HF) solution with an aqueous ammonia (NH3) solution in a HF/NH3 molar ratio >= 1.90. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) Chemical composition (II) containing in aqueous solution, in addition to ammonium hydrogen fluoride (NH4HF2), small amounts of HF and ammonium fluoride (NH4F); (2) Surfaces treated by optionally pretreatment, especially degreasing and/or wetting, contact with (I) or (II) and allowing this to act for as long as necessary to roughen and/or etch the surface, then washing (I)/(II) off with a neutralizing agent, especially water or aqueous caustic alkali solution; (3) Articles and objects with these surfaces.
