A procedure for automated transport of luggage items, in which the items of luggage at a check-in for flight departures are transported to a main transport plane (level) followed by a security check. The sorted pieces of luggage are transported to different luggage assembly points which correspond to a target airport, where the pieces of luggage at these luggage assembly points are separately, temporarily stored according to their destination. A given period of time before departure of an aircraft to a target airport leads to an empty end container or collecting container being transported from a temporary store station to a corresponding luggage assembly point. The end container or collecting container is loaded at a corresponding luggage assembly point, preferably automatically with the luggage items, in which the collecting container can serve one or more further luggage assembly points.
