The invention provides a single insulator, suitable for holding a wire strand which may easily engage a support post to form a removable or semi-permanent engagement with the support post. The insulator comprises an elongate body of substantially constant cross section incorporating at least one bore extending at least partially therethrough, to accomodate a wire strand, and incorporating at least one form of restraining means. The insulator may further be adapted to incorporate detection of an un-tensioned wire strand and/or tensioning thereof. The invention further provides a fence assembly and a method of erecting a wire fence.
