PURPOSE: An ADSL modem of a central office and an initializing method therefor are provided to share resources necessary for initializing many ports, and to operate the shared resources in one shared functional block, thereby supporting the ports. CONSTITUTION: An initializer(310) monitors office connection states between each port, and performs an initialization process between other offices when connected. An EC train unit(321) trains an echo canceller according to echo degrees of a line during the initialization process. A TEQ train unit(322) trains a time domain equalizer according to distorted degrees of a signal transmitted to the line. A bitload unit(323) determines data assignable by each frequency band according to noise power of the signal transmitted to the line. The EC train unit(321), the TEQ train unit(322), and the bitload unit(323) are selectively used while initializing each port under the control of the initializer(310).
