Safety device used for protecting pedestrians comprises an air bag device at least partly covering the outer side of a vehicle windscreen (1) when inflated, at least one gas generator (13) for inflating the air bag, and a sensor (17) for determining vehicle- and accident-specific data. The air bag device, the gas generator and the sensor are coordinated with each other so that the gas generator blows different volumes of gas in the direction of the air bag device depending on the data collected to cover the windscreen to different extents. Preferred Features: The sensor has a speed sensor (19) and is programmed so that as speed increases it instructs the gas generator to inflate an increasingly greater part of the air bag device.
