The press has a variable size pressing chamber with inlet opening and defined axially by side walls of a press housing and radially by a flexible conveyor belt (17) and a pressing roller (14, 15) whose radial position is automatically adjusted relative to the pressing chamber in dependence on the movement of the swivel arm assembly (31) which adjusts the position of the conveyor belt. The conveyor belt is guided over rollers (26, 27) whereby the lower guide roller (26) is displaced from above downwards relative to the adjoining pressing roller as the bale diameter becomes larger
