The method for the production of packages using blanks (10) of packing material esp. paper, is carried out with the material line or the blanks being scanned in the vicinity of the conveyor belt (11) by an optoelectronic device (15) with at least one sensor (16,17). The scanning device has a light source and transmitted signals in light wave conductors are received and evaluated. The material line or the paper blanks (10) are passed past the monitoring device (15) under the control of one or more sensors (16,17) in such a manner, that the sensor (17) is cleaned continuously by the material line or the blank sliding through the equipment to ensure the accuracy of any monitoring.
