Device in which a breathing signal is monitored to determine when a patient is awake or asleep. Accordingly means are provided for monitoring patient breathing and delivering a corresponding signal. The signal is averaged and compared with threshold values corresponding to sleeping and waking states. Sleeping and waking states are recorded. <??>The inventive device can be used in monitoring sleep disorders, such as apnea and can also be used with a pacemaker type device with means for stimulating the heart according to whether a sleeping or waking state is detected.
