PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide both a cyclic olefinic ring opening copolymer capable of providing a resin material having excellent transparency, heat resistance and high solubility in solvents, and a hydrogenated substance thereof. SOLUTION: This cyclic olefinic ring opening copolymer is obtained by carrying out ring opening copolymerization of a cyclic olefinic monomer represented by general formula (1) (wherein, R<SP>1</SP>to R<SP>8</SP>denote each hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a 1-10C aliphatic hydrocarbon group, an alicyclic hydrocarbon group, an aromatic hydrocarbon group and a polar group selected from an alkoxy group, hydroxy group, an ester group, cyano group, amide group, imide group, sulfonyl group, ketone group, amino group, sulfide group, ether group, thiol group and silyl group and an atom or a group selected from the group consisting of a polar hydrocarbon group substituted with a halogen atom and/or the polar group or another monovalent organic group; k is 0 or a positive number; and j is 0 or 1, with the proviso that j is 0 when k is 0) and other specific cyclic olefinic monomers.
