PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbonization apparatus for carbonizing organic waste, organic sludge or the like while preventing an excess or a shortage of combustion in the carbonizing section. SOLUTION: In this carbonization apparatus for carbonizing a raw material such as organic waste to be supplied in the rotary furnace 14 while burning the raw material, a combustion air amount control means is arranged which detects advance or delay in the shift of the temperature of the raw material under carbonizing combustion to the target carbonizing temperature and performs correction of the detected advance or the delay so that the temperature of the raw material is shifted to the preset target carbonizing temperature. The combustion air amount control means conducts the above correction by control to increase/decrease the amount of the air to be introduced into the raw material under combustion through outdoor air introducing pipes 39-41 communicated the open air. To that end, temperature detecting means 57-61 are provided which detect the temperature distribution of the raw material in the carbonizing section B of the rotary furnace 14, the advance or delay of the carbonizing combustion is detected on the basis of the detected temperature distribution, so that amount of the air to be introduced into the raw material under combustion in the longitudinal direction of the rotary furnace 14 is increased or decreased.
