PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize an occupation area of a column shift device in the circumference direction of a steering shaft for reducing the size of a column cover. SOLUTION: In this column shift device for an automobile, a select main body rotatably supporting a select lever 4, by which an automatic transmission mounted on a vehicle 1 is selectively switched into respective conditions is installed in the steering shaft 3, while a key lock arm 16 interlocking with a pulling operation of the select lever 4 and connected to a lock link on the key cylinder side, a solenoid 14 working for locking/releasing the selecting operation of the select lever according to a brake operation condition, and a shift lock plate 13, which is turned for preventing operation of the key lock arm when the solenoid is operated in one direction and allows operation of the key lock arm when the solenoid is operated in the other direction by a brake, are provided in the select main body. The solenoid 14 is arranged along the axial line of the steering shaft 3 in the direction crossing the turning direction of the shift lock plate 13 at right angles. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
