PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rear vehicle body structure for an automobile, capable of improving stiffness, by straddle-mounting the upper end of a shock absorber inside a rear side member and with a side wall section. SOLUTION: This rear vehicle body structure for the automobile is structured so that the upper end of the shock absorber for suspending wheels may be supported by the rear side member having roughly U-shaped cross section disposed in the lengthwise direction on both side sections of a vehicle body. In this rear vehicle body structure, an opening window 51 is formed on the underside of the rear side member 50, and the upper end supporting section 35a of the shock absorber 35 is disposed inside the rear side member 50 from the opening window 51.
