PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a vehicle running on an adjacent traffic lane speedily and accurately. SOLUTION: When an obstacle comes into an adjacent region, a detector tracks the obstacle based on image data, discriminates the shape of the obstacle, and determines whether the obstacle is a vehicle (S20, S40, S70). While, when the obstacle lies out of the adjacent region in an imaging region, the detector only tracks the obstacle based on the image data (S80, S90). COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
