PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a garbage treating apparatus the running cost and equipment cost of which are reduced while taking highly effective measures against a bad smell at the same time. SOLUTION: Three steps, which consists of a step to decompose garbage anaerobically in an anaerobic decomposing tank 1, a step to decompose the partly treated liquid withdrawn from the tank 1 aerobically in an aerobic decomposing tank 2 and a step to heat the treated liquid withdrawn from the tank 2 in a drier 3 and dry the residue in the treated liquid, are carried out in parallel in this garbage treating apparatus. The empty space of an anaerobic treating chamber 1S disposed in the tank 1 is allowed to communicate with that of an aerobic treating chamber 2S disposed in the tank 2 by a ventilation route 35. An exhaust gas introducing route 36 is arranged for introducing the high- temperature exhaust gas discharged from the drier 3 into the chamber 1S. A discharge route 40 is arranged for discharging the gas in the chamber 2S to the outside concurrently with the introduction of the exhaust gas to the anaerobic treating chamber 1S through the exhaust gas introducing route 36.
