PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a cleaning device which shortens a printing time by eliminating useless cleaning of a printing head to meet a required image quality and restricts evil effects on good nozzles. SOLUTION: The cleaning device for cleaning ink discharge parts is provided with an ink discharge-inspecting means for inspecting the presence/absence of ink discharge of the plurality of ink discharge parts which discharge ink to a medium to form images. A threshold is set corresponding to an operation mode of the ink discharge parts conformed to the image quality of images to be formed. Whether to clean or not is determined on the basis of the threshold and the inspection result of the ink discharge-inspecting means. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
