PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a searching method for rapidly and simply developing a catalyst suitable for specific vapor phase reaction like a method for manufacturing hydrogen by the decomposition of a lower hydrocarbon. SOLUTION: In the rapid searching method for the vapor phase reaction catalyst, one or more kinds of catalysts different from each other are introduced into a plurality of upwardly opened receptacles and all of one or more kinds of the receptacles are arranged in a reaction vessel. A raw material-containing gas is introduced into the reaction vessel to perform reaction such that the raw material-containing gas and one or more kinds of the catalysts are brought to a contact state under a heating condition to sort and evaluate the capacities of one or more kinds of the catalysts at the same time. Especially, this method is effective for developing a reaction catalyst for manufacturing hydrogen from methane. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
