671,249. Bearings. METROPOLITANVICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. March 1, 1950 [March 30, 1949], No. 5219/50. Class 12 (i). [Also in Group XXXV] Cross - magnetization is prevented in a magnetic bearing by means of a magnetic shunt of high permeability and low coercive force placed in contact with the magnet and conforming substantially to the cross-section of the magnet at the surface of contact. In the form shown, a single shunt 1 is fixed at the top of the outer cylindrical permanent magnet 2 which is supported in a non-magnetic housing 3 which may be die cast, while the supported member 6 which is also housed in a die-cast body 7 is located laterally by a guide pin 5. In modifications, the shunt may be placed at the bottom or top and bottom of the outer member or the magnet may be axially divided and the shunt placed at the centre. Alternatively, the shunt may be attached to the inner member. In a further modification, the permanent magnet structure comprises a series of permanent magnet laminµ magnetized across their thickness and interleaved with laminµ of material of high permeability and low coercive force. Suitable thicknesses of shunt are mentioned. Specification 550,788, [Group XXXVI], is referred to. |
