PURPOSE: An ATM cell buffering apparatus is provided to transfer an ATM cell to a lower ATM device which uses a UTOPIA level-2 interface and interface a burst data exceeding a bandwidth. CONSTITUTION: A cell input unit(100) receives a UTOPIA Level-1 data from an upper ATM device, extracts it as a certain bit of data, and output the data. A cell storing unit(200) temporarily stores the certain bit of data. A cell storing controller(300) counts cells stored in the cell storing unit(200) and controls storing of cells. An SRAM controller(400) reads the certain bit of data from the cell storing unit(200) to store the data in an external synchronous SRAM(500) by ports of a lower ATM device, reads the stored cells by ports and transfers them to an output side. The external synchronous SRAM(500) stores the cells by ports as received from the SRAM controller. A cell output unit(600) transfers the cells by ports as outputted from the SRAM controller to a lower physical device.
