<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that in a reflective liquid crystal display device, reflected light to be used for display deteriorates and visibility deteriorates extremely when ambient light is dark, and on the contrary, in a transmissive liquid crystal display device, the visibility under fine weather, etc., with very bright ambient light deteriorates. <P>SOLUTION: A liquid crystal display device has one substrate 1 on which a region having a reflection function and a region having a transmission function are formed, and the other substrate 2 on which a counter electrode 4 is formed, and a liquid crystal layer 5 is held between the one substrate 1 and the other substrate 2. The liquid crystal display device has further a first polarization means 9 provided on the surface opposite to the liquid crystal layer 5 of the substrate 1, a second polarization means 6 provided on the surface opposite to the liquid crystal layer 5 of the other substrate 2, a first phase difference plate 10 provided between the first polarization means 9 and the liquid crystal layer 5, and a second phase difference plate 7 provided between the second polarization means 6 and the liquid crystal layer 5. The transmission axis of the first polarization means 9 is orthogonal to that of the second polarization means 6, and the phase lagging axis of the first phase difference plate 10 is orthogonal to that of the second phase difference plate 7. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
