PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coloring method which can adequately color an anodic oxide film of magnesium or a magnesium alloy, without coating, and can prevent the peeling of the colored layer, and to provide a housing made from the magnesium material colored with the same. SOLUTION: The coloring method for the magnesium material comprises an anodic oxidation step S13 providing a white oxide film on the surface of a substrate, by anodizing the surface of the substrate made of magnesium or the magnesium alloy, and coloring the anodic oxide film without coating it.
