PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a character input device for a complex information equipment which can reduce the pushing times of a key for inputting a character which is used often, and can improve the efficiency of input. SOLUTION: This device is provided with a display means which displays document information and operation information on a screen, and an input means which is composed of over ten keys, and has various kinds of information processing functions, a function of displaying candidate input characters which switches and displays various types of characters in the display means by pushing a single key on the input means multiple times successively, and a character input function which selects and determines the input of one character among the candidate input characters displayed on the display means; and the displaying order of the various types of characters, which is to be displayed in the function of displaying candidate input character, is changed according to the kinds of input items in the information processing function.
