The paving slabs (2) are made e.g. from natural stone, concrete, ceramic, glass, wood or metal at least 2 cm thick and with longer dimensions between 10 and 20 times their thickness. They are stuck to a base layer (1) with a suitable adhesive (3), leaving gaps (4) between the slabs that are subsequently filled with a compressible material (5). The slabs can be stuck to a tear-resistant layer of a material such as glass fibre prior to applying it to the base layer, which can be of bitumen-bound gravel or a bituminous concrete. The adhesive is applied only to the under-surfaces of the slabs, so there is none in the gaps between them, and the filling material can be permeable to liquids and partially able to absorb sound waves.
