PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical cross-connected switch which can be quickly operated with a power smaller than that of a cross switch using conventional technology. SOLUTION: The optical switch includes a substrate (427) and a planar lightwave circuit (425) and forms a trench (402). A first waveguide (421), a second waveguide (423) and a third waveguide (422) are formed and cross at a part of the trench. If an index matching material exists at a cross position, a light traversing the first waveguide enters into the second waveguide. The light is reflected and guided to the third waveguide (422) in other cases. An index-matching liquid (404) is disposed in the vicinity of the cross position of the waveguides in a trench region for accommodating a working fluid (406). COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
