PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make connection of images among a plurality of sensor chips satisfactory by suppressing fluctuation of black levels in a contact image sensor consisting of a plurality of the serially arranged sensor chips. SOLUTION: When four or more signals from OB pixel parts in which difference equal to or more than two levels is generated at 255 (8 bit) exist and such signals are generated for over read of five sheets of original preliminarily or in comparison with output signals from the OB pixel part read at first of a job, reread of data for shading compensation is judged to be necessary. When the reread is judged to be necessary, the data for shading compensation is reread. Then, read of an original image as the next subject image is continued. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
