PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air/fuel ratio control device for a gas engine capable of inexpensively controlling an air/fuel ratio to a proper value regardless of load or other operation condition, and also to provide a control method therefor. SOLUTION: This air/fuel ratio control device for the gas engine E is composed of a fuel gas supply line (FL) on which a gas governor (1) is placed, an air supply line (AL), and a carburetor (3) for mixing a fuel and air from the lines (FL) and (AL), respectively. Further, the device has a balance pipe (BP) for communicating the inlet pressure of the carburetor (3) with the loading pressure-communicating port (1a) of the gas governor (1), a releasing rate variable atmospheric releasing valve (4) equipped on the balance pipe (BP), an O<SB>2</SB>sensor (5) placed on an exhaust system (EX), and a control means (8) for controlling the air/fuel ratio to a proper value by operating the atmospheric releasing valve (4) based on the input signal from the O<SB>2</SB>sensor (5).
