<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phase change type optical recording medium excellent in the overwrite shelf characteristics. <P>SOLUTION: The optical recording medium has a phase change type recording layer in which an amorphous mark is formed, in which the overwriting is performed by the irradiation of a laser beam whose intensity is modulated so as to have at least a recording power level and an erase power level, when the optimum erase level is made as the power level such that the maximum erase rate is obtained when a direct current erase operation for crystallizing an amorphous recording mark by the irradiation with a direct current laser beam is performed. The difference between the erase rate when the irradiation with the direct current laser beam having the power level of not lower than the optimum erase power level and not higher than the recording power level of the overwriting and the maximum erase rate is less than 10 dB. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
