PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a planar light emitting device enhanced the amount of outgoing light from an emitting face through the efficient use of the light from a light source and a liquid crystal display device capable of displaying a bright and uniform image throughout the display region. SOLUTION: The planar light emitting device 10 comprises a light source 13, a light guide plate 12 of which an exit face 12b is placed on the opposite side of a reflecting face 12c of the light transmitting in the light guide plate 12 and an optical means 11, which is prepared at a side end face 12a of the light guide plate 12 or at the light source 13 to control the light emission angle, that is, the range of the incident angle of the light from the light source 13 into the light guide plate 12.
