PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a red-light-emitting phosphor used in color displays such as CRTs and FEDs and improved in luminous characteristics without detriment to a luminous color and a color purity. SOLUTION: The red-light-emitting phosphor comprises an europium-activated yttrium oxysulfide phosphor having a composition represented by Y<SB>2</SB>O<SB>2</SB>S: Eu, R, W, Lu (wherein R is at least one element selected from Tb and Pr) and contains 4-9 mass % Eu, 5×10<SP>-4</SP>-5×10<SP>-3</SP>mass % R element, 5×10<SP>-4</SP>-1×10<SP>-2</SP>mass % W, and 5×10<SP>-4</SP>-1×10<SP>-1</SP>mass % Lu. It is desirable that the W and the Lu are contained in such amounts as to give a ratio (W/Lu) in the range of 0.2-2. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
