PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a package for housing an imaging element having the functions of optical low-pass filter and infrared cutoff filter in which stabilized optical characteristics can be attained without affected by the environment of the outside, while ensuring high reliability of a hermetic seal against a mechanical impact or a thermal impact from the outside. SOLUTION: The package for housing an imaging element comprises an insulating basic body 1 having a recess 1a for mounting an imaging element 4 on the upper surface, and a light transmissive cover 2 bonded to the upper surface of the insulating basic body 1 through a sealing material 3 to cover the recess 1a. The cover 2 is formed of a 0.1-1.5 mm thick plate material 2a of borosilicate glass, and a low-pass filter 2b of birefrigence plate X bonded to the upper surface of the plate material 2a, through an optical adhesive 7 having a refractive index of 1.4-1.6 and a light transmittance of 95% or above in a wavelength range of 500-800 nm.
