PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader and a method for positioning image frames capable of minimizing deviation of frame discriminating positions in use of long size film and for which only time shorter than the one for detecting edge parts of all the image frames and only small memory capacity required for an arithmetic operation are required. SOLUTION: The image reader is provided with feeding means 24, 25 for continuously feeding photographic film F in which a plurality of image frames are recorded, an illumination means 11 for illuminating the photographic film F, a light receiving means 13 for receiving transmitted light of the photographic film F illuminated by the illumination means 11, an image reading means 14 for reading the image on the photographic film F depending on light receiving quantity of the light receiving means 13, an image frame edge detecting means 14 for detecting image frame edges on the photographic film F, and a means 2 for calculating all the image frame positions from a detection result of the image frame edges at a plurality of positions on the photographic film F.
