<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact variable wavelength laser module which has comparatively wider variable range of wavelength and can be accommodated into a standard 14-pin butterfly package in this technical field. <P>SOLUTION: This variable wavelength laser module 10 is comprised of a laser source 12, an output monitor 14 and a wavelength monitor 16. The laser source is an integrated element integrating, on a semiconductor substrate 18, a DFB laser array 20 consisting of two DFB lasers 20A, 20B having different oscillation frequencies, an optical multiplexer 22 connected to each DFB laser, an optical amplifier 24, and the first photo-detector 26. The DFB laser array is formed by providing two DFB lasers in the shape of array via the isolation groove. The DFB laser includes a diffraction grating having the oscillation wavelengths of 1550 nm and 1553.2 nm when it is maintained at 25°C with TEC. The total variable wavelength width of 6.4 nm can be attained by changing temperature of TEC to 40°C from 10°C and then operating the DFB lasers 20A, 20B in different manners. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
