The present invention relates to hydroxyethylene compounds of formula (I), in which R<sp>a</sp> represents a group of formula (a) or (b) where R<sp>1</sp> represents −SO<sb>2</sb>R<sp>5</sp>, W<sb>1 </sb>represents CO or SO<sb>2</sb>, and the other variables are as defined in the claims, having Asp2 (&bgr;−secretase, BACE1 or Memapsin) inhibitory activity, processes for their preparation, compositions containing them, and their use in the treatment of diseases characterised by elevated &bgr;− amyloid levels or &bgr;−amyloid deposits, particularly Alzheimer's disease.
