The present invention relates to the production of modulated light signals (L2) for transmission of information (I). A proposed integrated device includes a laser section (451) and a modulator section (452). The laser section (451) generates a primary light signal (L1) by means of a distributed feedback process. The modulator section (452) influences the primary light signal (L1) by means of an electroabsorption process, such that a desired modulated light signal (L2) is produced. The laser section (451)and the modulator section (452) are completely separated from each other in electrical terms, i.e. both with respect to anode and cathode areas. As a result thereof, a single supply voltage (+Vcc) can be used to operate the device. An optical transmitter according to the invention contains, in addition to the proposed integrated device, a protocol converter (410) which receives an information signal (I) to be transmitted. The protocol converter (410) generates, in response to the information signal (I), a control signal (CI) which is received by a modulator driver (420). Based on the control signal (CI), the modulator driver (420) produces a modulating signal (MI), which causes a modulated light signal (L2) that represents the information signal (I) to be fed out from the device. A laser bias control unit (430) controls the output power level of the primary light signal (L1) via a bias current (IB), which is further based on a detected leak signal (L'1) from the laser section (451).
|
