摘要 A smart card package (112) includes two on-board batteries (102, 110) for providing uninterrupted power to a programmed, volatile memory unit (108A). The first battery (102) is a non-rechargeable battery with sufficient capaci ty to provide power to the volatile on-board memory (108a) during an initial storage period between programming the memory and deployment of the smart ca rd (100). This initial storage period may be, for example, approximately two years. The second battery (110) is a rechargeable battery that will be charg ed by the host device in which the smart card is deployed. The second, rechargeable battery can provide power to the volatile memory (108a) throughout the life of the card, after the first, non-rechargeable battery (102) is dead. Specifically, the second, rechargeable battery (110) can provide power to the non-volatile memory when needed during, for example, an y subsequent storage period or during movement of the smart card between host devices.
