Organic compounds are recovered from the roots of living plants by treating said roots by an extraction with enzymes. The plant is removed from its growing medium, subjected to the extraction and then returned to its original growing medium. The process is thus nondestructive and the plant can be subjected to the enzyme treatment again when it has regenerated the compounds that have been removed. A preferred growing medium is a hydroponic medium. The method has special utility for providing lead compounds to the pharmaceutical research industry.
