<p>An image shifting device having at least one image shifting unit for shifting the position of the optical axis periodically. The image shifting unit comprises a liquid crystal element 10 in which the direction of polarization of light is switched between two directions perpendicular to each other depending on High/Low of an applied voltage and a birefringence element having indices of refraction for the respective directions of polarization of light. The liquid crystal element 10 and the birefringence element 11 are arranged in this order of mention to transmit light. The liquid crystal element 10 includes a TN mode liquid crystal layer satisfying the relation 0.25<d/p<1 where p is the natural pitch length and d is the cell gap. Thus the liquid crystal molecules are twisted by 90°.</p>
