The invention relates to a method for controlling the gear shifts of an automatic gearbox or an automated gearbox (2) of a motor vehicle. The gear shifts of the gearbox are carried out by means of a control device (3) in two different operating modes. In a first operating mode, the gearbox is operated according to the automatic mode and the gear shifts are automatically carried out, essentially by means of determined driving variables and by means of the control device (3). In said automatic mode, however, the respective automatic driving program and/or the respectively highest gear to be shifted can be determined or selected. In a second operating mode, the gearbox is operated according to the automated manual shifting mode, and the gear shifts are carried out by means of the control device (3) and an actuating device (12) which can be manually operated by the driver. The driving comfort is thus increased in such a way that the actuating device (12) and/or the control system are technically embodied and/or implemented in terms of control in such a way that the respective automatic driving program and/or the respectively highest gear to be shifted can be selected by means of the actuating device (12) when the gearbox is in the automatic mode.
