A method and system that maintains lock properties for a resource or object in a distributed environment. The lock properties provide other client computer systems limited availability to the locked resource. The method and system providing for the modification of a lock object associated with the resource in a distributed environment. Modification allows for the change in lock type, lock scope, lock ownership and/or resource association.
