There is provided a process for the preparation of a compound of formula (I), which process comprises reaction of a compound of formula (II), with either: (a) a formaldehyde and a compound of formula (III), R<a>-OH and/or (b) a protected derivative of a formaldehyde, wherein R<1>, R<2> and R<a> have meanings given in the description.
