The invention relates to a striking mechanism comprising a hammer tube (3) having at least one control opening (23) through which, in an idle running position, the air can escape from the hammer tube (3), and which, in a striking position, can be closed by a cover (25) preventing the outflow of air. In order to seal the at least one control opening (23) as tightly as possible, and thus to achieve a high degree of efficiency of the striking mechanism, the cover (25) is formed from an elastomer.
