According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, there is provided a method and apparatus for monitoring the air quality by means of an air filter (88) disposed in an air conduit passage (111), where a monitoring apparatus (60) is in fluid communication with an air conduit opening in order to determine if the filter has come into contact with any unsafe pollutants in that air received from the air conduit passage (111). Such air quality monitoring apparatus also having removable filter cartridges or modules (77) containing a monitoring filter (88) can be safely removed and inspected to determine whether or not any unsafe pollutants have been introduced to the air within a confined structure such as a building or a cleaning room. Another embodiment relates to a valve member (93) for self-actuating when the module (77) is removed to examine the monitoring filter (88).
