[Also in Division D1] Fabrics made from keratinous fibres, e.g. fibres from sheep, lambs, goats, llama, alpaca, or vicuna, alone or in admixture with nylon fibres, are shrinkproofed and creaseproofed by contacting them with a solution of a decausticized polymeric alcohol xanthate of degree of substitution greater than 3% and pH less than 13, at a solution concentration and time of contact sufficient to produce a polymeric alcohol add-on of 0.1-10% by weight on the fabric, and regenerating the polymeric alcohol on the fabric by heat or chemical decomposition of the xanthate, e.g. with hydrochloric acid, the decausticized polymeric alcohol xanthate may be an alkali cellulose xanthate, amylose xanthate, dextrin xanthate, polyvinyl alcohol xanthate or polyallyl alcohol xanthate obtained by subjecting the alkaline solution thereof to dialysis or to treatment with ion exchange or retardation materials and optionally spray drying and redissolving the products obtained. Prior to treatment the fabrics may be scoured, treated with hydrogen peroxide solution which may contain tetrasodium pyrophosphate, treated with a diisocyanate, e.g. dianisidine diisocyanate in methylene chloride, tolylene diisocyanate in acetone or diphenylene p,p'-diisocyanate in acetone, or buffered to a pH of 10. The treating solution may also contain a wetting agent, e.g. dioctyl sulphosuccinate, dialdehyde starch, a mixture of formaldehyde and ammonium chloride or a diisocyanate. After treatment with the solution prior to drying, the fabric may be arranged in creases and pressed with a hot iron to impart permanent creases thereto. |
