<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently and economically producing 4,4'- dihydroxydiphenyl ether by dehydrative dimerization of hydroquinone and 1,4- bis(4-hydroxyphenoxy)benzene by dehydrative trimerization of hydroquinone as well as a mixture thereof. <P>SOLUTION: The method for producing 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl ether and 1,4-bis(4-hydroxyphenoxy)benzene by dehydrative dimerization and/or dehydrative trimerization of hydroquinone, as the mixture thereof comprises employing as a catalyst a cation exchange resin of strong acidity and thermal resistance of which the difference between an ion exchange capacity after heated for 12 hours in boiling ortho-xylene and that before heated is within a range of ±10%, particularly a brominated cation exchange resin containing a group shown by general formula (I) below (wherein, the benzene ring may be further substituted with an alkyl group or a halogen atom) as a component to be repeated. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
