PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an unsaturated dibasic acid ester of high purity in a high yield, of which the hue of APHA (American Public Health Association) is lower than 100. SOLUTION: In producing the unsaturated dibasic acid ester of which the hue of APHA (American Public Health Association) is lower than 100, from an alcohol and an unsaturated dibasic acid or an unsaturated dibasic acid anhydride, the method includes the following processes. Process 1: Process for esterification by using an acid catalyst, Process 2: Process for contacting the reaction mixture obtained in the Process 1 with an aqueous solution containing 5 to 30% by weight of an alkali, then washing and separating the layers.
